I've been learning to play the guitar and they say it's a waste of time. If I were them, I'd be ecstatic that my child has the passion to learn something new. I'm going to college in a couple weeks and I really want to trade my crappy Yamaha acoustic and pay the difference for a better one. My dad said that I shouldn't waste my time and to focus more on schoolwork... but it's not like I'm going to be burying my face in books 24/7. It's frustrating... I don't know what to do. I love music and I can't go a day without playing guitar.
Why do my parents hate it when I practice music?
Keep playing your guitar. Having a musical interest is great and I hope you stick with it. Your parents aren't always going to be in agreement with you. Since you are going off to college you are old enough to make decisions on your own (as long as they are smart ones). Get a better guitar, keep practicing, maybe hit some talent shows in the future and then when you visit your mom and dad have something prepared especially for them (something they would like) to show them it wasn't a waste of time. Just be sure that your school work still comes first because if your grades start slipping your parents will have a reason to keep telling you it's a waste of time.
Reply:Forget what they say.
Reply:Learning to play an instrument is a good thing. The focus it takes to learn and play improves your focus in other things, like your schoolwork. It can also b a good stress reliever, and you will need that in college. Your dad is wrong.
Reply:parents... they think playing the guitar is a show of rebeling, they don't want to see there child grow-up and start wanting to do things on there own and if your going to college that just makes things worse... becaz your dad doesn't know how to play {i'm assuming} he thinks he can't relate or help you in your intrests, you should show your parents you can still keep up with your skool work an still have time for them and your guitar
Reply:BECAUSE YOUR MUSIC SKILLS HAVEN BLOOMED....BUY DAD SOME EAR MUFFS...............
Reply:I'm sorry that your parents are so negative about your passion
have you sat them down face to face and asked why?
IF you can afford to pay the difference in the prices of the 2 guitars, your grades are excellent, and can pay for your college fees..etc
I'd say... go for it
IF your parents are paying for your college stuff- prove to them that you can have your passion and continue to get superb grades and renegotiate after showing them the grades
Reply:They probably worry you will be a starving musician and hear the horror stories. Don't let them run your life though. When you go to college do your best there, and rather then spend all that time partying(as most students do) spend some of working on your music.
Reply:There are some answers, but it's up to You, which is truth:
- they want You to be musician, but they don't like your broken sound loops.
- they don't believe You'll ever be good in music, so they think You should spend Your time for something else.
- they don't like instrument chosen by You.
- they just don't like music at all.
I hope it's the first one.
Reply:Crank it up as loud as possible..... Buy the biggest loudest amplifier and play your guitar as much as possible.
I 'll refrain from anymore comments on this subject.
Reply:cause they don't like our music and any ways it's noise!
Reply:play it on your own time, and do not be concerned with what your parents think the more you play the better you will get.. say do you have unnaturally colored hair?
Reply:Maybe you could figure out what kind of music they like and then learn one of those songs to persuade them on how cool music is
Reply:maybe they see that it will benefit u in nothing !!
but i thnk they are wrong..
and maybe they hate music in general and guitar in particular !!
